Curated by Pinakin Patel, this exhibition at Emami Art presents a wide selection of Dashrath Patel’s line drawings, ceramics, photographs and collages from the 1930s to 2000, tracing his artistic journey across mediums and types. Its specific focus is on Patel’s educational experiences, from his inspiring teachers — like Harendranath Chattopadhyaya who revealed the poetry of art to him, or Henri Cartier-Bresson who trained him to see with anticipation — to the places he studied and the people he met. It thus explores his connection to artists like S.H. Raza, who he studied with at the Ecole Beaux Arts, Paris; M.F. Husain, Tyeb Mehta and Nasreen Mohamedi, who were his classmates at Bhulabhai Desai Institute; and Robert Rauschenburg, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, who were his teachers as well as his contemporaries.
