An Artist Sneaking into the Movies: Hetain Patel

May 1, 2022 3:00 pm — 3:45 pm

Auditorium, India Art Fair Grounds

Artist Hetain Patel will be in conversation with gallerist Mortimer Chatterjee of Chatterjee & Lal, about the making of his latest performance and film project, Trinity, the culmination of five years of investigation into his personal history and identity as a British artist of Indian descent, and inter generational conflicts that informs his eccentric visual language. This talk has been made possible with the generous support of British Council India.

Hetain Patel is a visual and performing artist. Patel is interested in connecting marginalised identities with the mainstream in an effort to destabilise notions of authenticity and promote personal freedom. With an autobiographical starting point he uses humour and the languages of popular culture to highlight familiarity within the exotic, recognition within the unknown. His works are in public and private collections in the UK and internationally, including Tate, British Council and Fondazione In Between Art Film. Collaborating with artists across disciplines, with family members and non professionals, Patel enjoys working across multiple languages, culturally and artistically. He is represented by Chatterjee & Lal, Mumbai, is a New Wave Associate at Sadler’s Wells, London, is a Patron of QUAD, Derby, Patron of Film London’s Jarman Award, and sits on the Artist Council for a-n.

Mortimer Chatterjee co-founded Chatterjee & Lal with his wife, Tara Lal, as well as 47-A, a design gallery. Based in Mumbai, the galleries are focused on contemporary and historical material. Chatterjee has authored and co-authored several publications and is editor of an evolving series of publications on disciplines across the arts and culture spectrum, the first of which is focused on modern and contemporary art from the Indian subcontinent.
