Anupa Mehta Arts brings a solo exhibition — Arriving — showcasing works by contemporary artist Guler Ates.
With the exhibition, Güler Ateş questions concepts and notions such as mobility, arriving, migration, diaspora, as well as ideas of East/West, in addition to the themes of femininity and space, which have been the focus of her practice. The artist brings to the fore not only a physical act, but also an act of interiority: What is arriving? Does the process which we experience whilst moving from one place to another determine the entirety of the journey? What distinguishes our point of arrival? Is arriving tantamount to an ending? Last but not least, where is space within all this activity? Or, as individuals and women, (in the interior sense), are we still in the place that we have left behind?
Prompting us to these queries, Güler Ateş creates a poetic ambiguity around woman and space in her works – they oscillate between space, woman, past and future.
