Gallery Espace will debut Bapu in Three Voices, a group show dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, timed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Indian independence. The show will examine the relevance of the Mahatma in a world that is increasingly riven by violence, inequality and the disregard for our shared environment, and will feature digital photography by Anuj Ambalal, pigment ink prints by Ashok Ahuja and mixed-media canvas panels by Sharad Sonkusale.
Ambalal’s photographs focus on the iconic, and often ironic traces of the Mahatma in contemporary India, and are woven with humor, sarcasm and reverence.
Ahuja’s prints focus on Gandhi the writer, to whom the printing press carried as much value in his struggle for satyagraha as the charkha.
Sonkusale’s seven-panel work, titled Archive of the Mind, is an extended riff on The Story of My Experiments with Truth, which is Mahatma Gandhi’s account of his childhood and early youth.
