Chemould Prescott Road presents ‘Biophilia’ a solo by Gigi Scaria. The show draws from Erich Fromm’s concept of “biophilia”—a love for all life—while also confronting the opposing necrophilic state, rooted in death and decay, that dominates modern capitalist societies. Adajania notes that the melancholic tone of Scaria’s paintings, sculptures, and videos depicts a world marred by human intervention, where land is quarried and infrastructure reigns. Despite this, symbols of hope emerge, such as a golden tree and a lotus blooming from a scarred earth, asserting nature’s resilience. Scaria’s works often feature unsettling juxtapositions: animals trapped in scaffolding, heroic statues pulled from pedestals, and dead trees perched with eagles. While Fromm warned of humanity’s necrophilic tendencies, Scaria remains an optimist, suggesting through his art that nature will ultimately prevail, offering a reminder of the importance of interdependence among all species.
