Masha Art presents, Bond To Bachchan, a group show where art and cinema examines the tough exterior and the hidden soft underbelly of cinema, its icons of masculinity as well its popular tropes. Cinema has a very long and old history going back to the 19th century and it is was parallel to the industrialisation of the economy across the world. It has been the ‘Opium of the Masses’, and like all things in life, is a double edged sword. While the power of the darkened cinema hall, the booming voice of the actors, the larger than life characters they portray and the fantasy it allowed even the working class individual to slip into, cinema is indeed hard to parallel as an immersive experience, there is another side of the coin. Big-budget cinema has been critiqued for perpetuating stereotypes, with regards to race, gender as well as class and caste and it has often simply fallen in with and propagated larger capitalistic agenda of the industrialised world.
