Chemould turns 60: Multiple Shows

September 15-December 23, 2023

Chemould Prescott Road and Chemould CoLab, Colaba, Mumbai, India

Chemould Prescott Road turns 60 this year and is commemorating the occasion with Chemould60, an intergenerational celebration, with a two part show titled, CheMoulding: Framing Future Archives. Curated by Shaleen Wadhwana, the two part exhibition recognises the art frame moulding company as the genesis of the gallery which has been a catalyst in moulding Indian art history and its contemporary present.  The features features work by over 30 Chemould contemporaries such as Jitish Kallat, Shilpa Gupta, Anju Dodiya, Varunika Saraf and Nilima Sheikh. These artists have responded to personalised curatorial prompts from the archive, surrounded by archival memorialisation of veteran artists ranging from Tyeb Mehta, K.H. Ara to Bhupen Khakhar, Rummana Hussain, Jangarh Singh Shyam. The show has two parts: ‘Framing’, on view from 15th September to 28th October, and ‘Futuring’, on view from 15th November to 23rd December.

Besides, the show, the gallery will also host a special week-long nostalgic revisitation of the former Gallery Chemould space with public programming, titled ‘Remembering’, from 30th October to 5th November.

Chemould CoLab, a space to nurture younger artists and to create a space that builds new careers, founded by the third generation of the Chemould Family, will show a group show Continuum alongside CheMoulding: Framing Future Archives. Curated by Atyaan Jungalwala and Sunaina Kewalramani, Continuum features Chemould CoLab’s young artists in Chemould60 by responding to artists that are part of the current Chemould Prescott Road stable of artists. With these intersections, the artists from Chemould CoLab have been given prompts that will nudge, provoke and create new conversations.
