Canvas Gallery presents a solo show of visual practitioner Hamra Abbas, Color Wheel, featuring a series of multi-media works harnessing the power of light through sculpture, encapsulated in the corporeal form of colour. Abbas’ trajectory has led her to investigate the materiality and philosophies of this element of art through a spiritual and historic lens. Inspired by the formal aesthetic properties of the holy Kaaba, Abbas’ journey began with creative reverence for its chthonic blackness, segueing to Modern Art’s iconic Minimalist scions Kazimir Malevich, Josef Albers, Sol Le Witt, and gleaning geometric harmonics from Mughal architecture of her native Lahore: a whirlwind of transnational experience distilled into loci of respective plexiglass and LED lights, and the romance of marble, granite and precious inlayed stones of the Earth.
