Dialogues Across Time: Indian Contemporary and Folk Art

January 11-March 31, 2025

Indian Museum, 27, Jawaharlal Nehru Rd, Kolkata, India

The Indian Museum in collaboration with Basu Foundation present, Dialogues Across Time: Indian Contemporary and Folk Art. The primary objective of this exhibition is to create a dynamic and thought-provoking dialogue between the museum’s historical collections and contemporary artistic expressions. By situating contemporary art within the museum’s existing spaces, the curator Sayantan Maitra Boka  aims to explore the intersections of past, present, and future, encouraging visitors to reconsider the role of museums in shaping cultural narratives.

The exhibition will strategically place contemporary and folk art within the existing displays of the museum which is currently celebrating 210 years. For example, a contemporary installation might be situated in the same gallery as ancient statues, creating a visual and conceptual conversation between the two. The juxtaposition of old and new will challenge viewers to rethink the linear progression of art and culture, highlighting the continuity and transformation of artistic expression across time.
