Chemould Prescott Road presents Shadows: One Yet Separate Mithu Sen’s first solo museum show in Croatia. The title of the show refers to the prose poem “Sjena (Shadow)” by Croatian poet A. G. Matoš. Additionally, a series of new drawings and installations showing in museum space bear the signs of some Matoš’s handwritten poems (digitized material by Manuscripts and Old Books Collection of the National and University Library in Zagreb).
Here, Croatian scripts from Matoš’s poetry are deconstructed and overwritten, transformed into visual forms as asemic scripts to create poetic structures through trance states and automatic writing or conscious psychography. These forms lack specific semantic content or recognizable language structure but present visually intriguing, non-representational glyphs, marks, or strokes that resemble writing without conforming to linguistic rules.
