Warp, Weft, and Memories: Workshop with Arpita Akhanda

May 1, 2022 5:00 pm — 5:45 pm

Workshop Space, India Art Fair Grounds

Led by artist Arpita Akhanda, this workshop invites participants to carry photographs or photocopies of images which represent their idea of home. The artist will guide them as they cut up and weave these memories into new images and artworks as a way of rediscovering themselves and their personal histories.

Arpita Akhanda was born in 1992 in Cuttack, Odisha and works in various mediums including paper weaving, photography, performance, installation, drawing, and video work. Arpita completed her B.F.A. and M.F.A. in painting from Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati University in Santiniketan in 2015 and 2017 respectively. Brought up in a family of artists who migrated from Bangladesh to India during the Partition of Bengal, Arpita explores memory and histories of colonialism in her work. She was a recipient of the Inlaks Fine Art Award in 2022 and the FICA Emerging Artist Award extended support platform in 2020. Arpita currently lives and works in Santiniketan, West Bengal.

The reimagined Workshop Space at India Art Fair will hold a series of workshops titled ‘Rediscovery’ curated by an art education organisation LAND (Learning through Arts, Narrative and Discourse). They will be held in Hindi and English, with a select number in Sign Language, and will be open to the public with one-on-one engagement through experience sheets and a 3-day art pedagogy program for educators around India.
