GONDWANA ART PROJECT
India’s extraordinary cultural diversity is vividly reflected in the rich and varied art forms of its indigenous communities. Each tribe is recognised for distinct aesthetic traditions, materials, and artistic techniques, used to portray motifs deeply rooted in their environment, beliefs, and cultural practices. Indian tribal art narrates stories of daily life, customs and rituals, spiritual beliefs, natural phenomena, and the profound relationship between indigenous peoples and the natural world. Today, contemporary tribal artists carry these ancient traditions forward while embracing new materials such as acrylics and canvas, continuing the legacy of storytelling through evolving artistic expression. The Craft and Community Development Foundation (CCDF) is a not-for-profit organisation established to support and fund initiatives that enhance livelihoods in the arts and crafts sector. The Gondwana Art Project is a key component of its mission, focusing on upskilling artisans, sustaining traditional knowledge, and promoting contemporary Indian art and craft practices. CCDF has successfully delivered several initiatives, including the exhibition Modern Tribal at the India Habitat Centre, which explored diverse tribal styles from the region; Modern Tribal – Connecting Traditions at Bikaner House; Echoes of Nature at the India Art Fair; and Echoes of the Earth: Tribal and Desert Art at NERAM, Australia.
