Akara is a Mumbai-based gallery committed to bridging the rich legacies of South Asian modernism with the evolving vocabulary of contemporary art. Established in 2015 by Puneet Shah and Meghna Shah, the gallery initially presented a unified programme that brought together modern and contemporary practices, often through intergenerational exhibitions that highlighted continuity, influence, and cross-dialogue across time.

1. ROLE: Gallery Assistant
Tenure: Full-time, on-site (Tuesday to Saturday)
Location: Mumbai
Start Date: January 2026

Key Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Conduct comprehensive art and artist research to support exhibitions, social media and programming.
  • Assist in planning, organizing, and executing exhibitions and related events.
  • Assist in managing day-to-day administrative tasks and maintain documentation as required.
  • Oversee social media communication, including content creation, scheduling, and audience engagement.
  • Engage with visitors in the galleries and provide helpful, informed assistance.

 

Requirements:

1. Must be based in Mumbai.
2. Prior experience working in a gallery, museum, or cultural organization. Freshers can
also apply.
3. Bachelor’s degree in art, museum studies, art history, literature, or a related field.
4. Strong understanding of modern and contemporary Indian art; excellent written and
communication skills and fluency in English are highly desirable.
5. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with inventory management or CRM
database systems.
6. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a small team.

2. ROLE: Outreach & Communications Assistant
Tenure: Full-time, on-site (Tuesday to Saturday)
Location: Mumbai
Start Date: January 2026

Key Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Assist with outreach activities and programming.
  • Create and schedule content for social media, newsletters, exhibition press releases, and the gallery website.
  • Help write promotional materials.
  • Reach out to press and media contacts with exhibition press releases and updates.
  • Maintain contact lists, update databases, and support event logistics.
  • Provide basic graphic design or content support as needed.

Requirements:

  • Must be based in Mumbai
  • Prior experience in outreach, communications, or working in a gallery, museum, or cultural organization is desirable.
  • Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree in art, design, museum studies, art history, literature, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interest in art, culture, and community engagement.
  • Familiarity with social media and basic design/digital tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Suite).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently and collaboratively within a small team.
