Chatterjee & Lal presents Depth Charge, Moumita Das’ solo show of textile-works.
In works that comprise of tapestries and knitted surface, Das explores the aggressive strains of her artistic labour. Posited as abstract bodies and ‘wounds’, these soft-seeming surfaces bear witness to forms of civic strife. Even the serenity of a peaceful sunset is burnished by the blood-red fibres.
Inspired by the natural world, Das makes use of techniques ranging from crochet to threadworm, vegetable dying, and appliqué. Rough textures are created from fibre blends including wool, hemp, jute, and cotton. Wielding natural material in jarring textures, we see the artist’s innovative methodical interpretations.
