Dhoomimal Gallery and Cultivate Art present Exodus, a solo show exhibiting paintings and sculptures by Rewati Shahani exploring human geography across colonial and modern contexts.
The artist uses maps, some intricate and some abstracted, to challenge the ethno-political delineations of the 20th century and examine their reverberations in the 21st. With layered oil paintings and earthen ceramic sculptures, Shahani returns to the geological imagery seen in most of her work. Standing stones, cliffs and mountains interrupt horizons – their raw and natural grandeur contrasting stubbornly with the arbitrary contours of man-made nations – to offer a more positive vision for the future, based not on the need to flee but the freedom to explore.
