Shrine Empire presents Lie Machine – Men and the Moon Do Not Care , Moonis Ijlal’s debut solo, which teases out the complicities between domesticity and occupation, exposing how we are, in the words of American feminist philosopher Judith Butler, ‘vulnerable to each other.’ Framed as innocuous cellular screens, Ijlal’s paintings complicate our entanglements with these black mirrors that have become our primary means of mediating reality. On the one hand, cell phones have been decried as personal surveillance devices generating endless streams of metadata mobilised for control.
