OVERVIEW
The Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD is a prestigious residency programme in Berlin, Germany, for international artists across several disciplines. It offers selected artists time and space to focus on their practice, engage with Berlin’s dynamic cultural scenes, and create connections.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
- Open to international artists working in the fields of film, literature, and music & sound.
- In the visual arts category, applications are not accepted—artists in visual arts are invited via nomination by a specialist jury.
- Applicants must have already developed their own voice and practice; this is not aimed at artists just emerging or still in school.
- German nationals are excluded unless they have lived principally outside Germany for at least six years. Artists who reside primarily in Germany are also excluded (with limited exceptions).
APPLICATION PROCESS
- The call opens mid‑October/November for the next year’s cycle. For example, for 2027 the application period opens 15 November 2025.
- The deadline for disciplines film, literature, and music & sound for the 2027 cycle is 15 December 2025.
- Applicants complete two steps: (1) personal data form, (2) application form (includes CV, portfolio, project statement).
- Applications must be submitted online; physical submission may be possible only in specific cases.
DURATION & BENEFITS
Duration: For literature, music & sound, residencies are generally 12 months. For film, the period is 6 months.
Benefits include: monthly stipend for living, furnished apartment, travel and relocation costs (including for partner/children if accompanying), insurance, optional German language courses.
