Gate44 | Printmaking Residency | Milan

Gate 44 is pleased to announce an international Open Call for artists and creatives, among which one will be awarded a production-based residency in the field of printmaking in our Milan workshop.

The aim of this call is to promote the advancement of printmaking within the contemporary art world. At Gate 44, we believe in the expressive power of print, recognize its cultural legacy throughout history, and are deeply interested in its evolving role and direction in today’s art scene.

Artists are encouraged to adopt an interdisciplinary approach, creating a body of work that explores and experiments with diverse techniques and media, combining them in innovative and original ways.

Deadline: February 22, 2026 – 12 pm (CET)

Benefits:

• 2 weeks funded production residency at our Milan facility within the period between April 2026 and April 2027 (specific dates to be determined in collaboration with the selected participant).

• Technical assistance. A dedicated and skilled technical team providing guidance and hands-on support for the production of one or more editions.

• A budget of 1000 € spendable in materials.

• Private on-site apartment equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, and courtyard, adjacent to the print studio, for the full duration of the residency.

• 24/7 access to a state-of-the-art production space equipped for: relief printing, intaglio techniques, photo‑lithography, photo‑polymer, screen printing, letterpress, digital fine art.

• Basic print-shop materials and tools included (cleaning agents, solvents, rags, spatulas, squeegees, rollers, etc.)

• Social media coverage and a feature on Gate44’s website

 

Eligibility Criteria

• Artists whose practice already includes printmaking to some extent.

• Artists who have a minimum base knowledge and understanding of one or more print techniques (even though professional technical assistance will be provided).

• Artists who are eager to expand their technical toolkit and expressive potential.

• Artists who embrace experimentation, interdisciplinary approaches, and the blending of multiple printmaking methods.

• Conceptual and thematic originality or aesthetic and technical innovation.

• Interdisciplinary and experimental approaches, both within printmaking and in combination with other media.

• Expand the expressive possibilities of printmaking through the integration of multiple techniques.

• Thoughtful use of the residency’s time frame and technical resources.

 

Requirments

• Must be able to travel to Milan for the scheduled residency, and be able to use the provided materials and equipment.

• Uphold a professional work ethic and conduct throughout the residency.

• Work must fit within a maximum paper size of 50 × 70 cm (no minimum size).

• A minimum production of 10 finished prints is required.

• Create a minimum of one printed edition or multiple unique pieces.

• Agree to transfer three copies of each edition printed to Gate44’s archives.

 

Application Guidelines

The application fee is 30€. The payment link can be found on the Open Call page: https://www.gate44.eu/open-call/.
After completing the payment, send an email to [email protected] with the subject line: Open Call | Name Surname.

In the email, please specify your full name, nationality, country of residence (if different), date of birth and your preferred residency period (between April 2026 and April 2027).

Attach the following documents:

• Receipt of payment

• A PDF of maximum 12 Mb containing a concise and precise project proposal outlining your objectives and how you plan to spend your time in residency. The proposal should include a brief supporting text to the sketches or mockups of the work(s) you intend to produce. It should give indications regarding printmaking techniques, formats, edition numbers when applicable and any other relevant information.

• A PDF of maximum 12 Mb including a portfolio of recent print-related works, an artist statement and bio, social media contacts and website.

Please note that only complete submissions will be considered.

 

Fee and Deadline

• Entry fee: €30*, to be paid online.

• Application deadline: February 22, 2026.

* The participation fee covers the costs of managing applications, organisational expenses, labour, and raw materials. Gate 44 carries out this activity purely for cultural and social purposes, without any profit motive.
