In Conversation with Jitish Kallat

February 2, 2019 11:30 am — 12:15 pm

Auditorium, India Art Fair Grounds

Indian contemporary artist Jitish Kallat will discuss his multimedia practice with Adam Szymczyk, curator of the recently concluded documenta 14. A recent monograph on the artist, published by Mapin and Prestel, and edited by Natasha Ginwala (with support from Nature Morte, Chemould Prescott Road and Galerie Templon), will also be launched at the fair.

Jitish Kallat was born in Mumbai in 1974, the city where he continues to live and work. Kallat’s vast oeuvre, spanning painting, photography, drawing, video and sculptural installations, reveals his persistent preoccupation with some of the fundamental themes of human existence. Kallat’s works have been exhibited widely at museums and institutions, including Tate Modern in London and Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. He was the curator and artistic director of Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2014.

Adam Szymczyk was the Artistic Director of documenta 14. Born in 1970 in Piotrków Trybunalski, Poland, he currently serves as the Director and Chief Curator of Kunsthalle Basel where he has organised world-renowned exhibitions and group shows. Prior to this, Szymczyk co-founded the Foksal Gallery Foundation in Warsaw, where he worked as a curator from 1997 to 2003.  He presently serves as a member of the Board of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw.
