Art Pilgrim presents ‘The Journey Within‘. This retrospective of master sculptor and Padma Shri awardee Biman B. Das, is a homage in bronze, terracotta, wood, and stone spanning five decades. Biman B. Das is an alumnus of the Govt. College of Art & Craft, Kolkata where he also served as Principal. His choice of subject matter, style, and technique is deeply influenced by his childhood, dedicated archival research, and international exposure. He was born in 1943 in Tamluk, West Bengal, and spent his early years steeped in the historically and culturally prosperous atmosphere of rural West Bengal. His academic research as a student focussed on three-dimensional concepts in Indian sculpture and temple architecture. As a British Council Scholar and Fulbright Scholar, he pushed the boundaries of Indian classism infusing it with a modern aesthetic. These experiences resulted in Biman. B. Das’ signature forms – traditional Indian sculptural motifs transformed using abstraction and symbolism to highlight a contemporary
essence.
