Avtar Foundation for the Arts, presents, Untitled: Portraiture through the Avtar Collection. Founder Jaiveer Johal, is dedicated to fostering and making accessible Modern and Contemporary South Asian visual arts in Chennai.
Its debut exhibition, Untitled: Portraiture through the Avtar Collection, explores the timeless allure of portraiture. A portrait is a portal – it allows one to access another world, not only in the sense of harking back in time but also the internal world of the painter and their subject. It allows for the peeling of the layers of persona, personality and appearances while studying the
politics, ethics and social mores of the subject. The collection begins with the familiar: intricate Rajput miniatures showcasing power and legacy, and vibrant pichwais capturing divine grandeur. As it progresses, contemporary works by artists like Nandini Valli Mutiah, Lionel Wendt, and Rekha Rodwittiya redefine portraiture—blending vulnerability, fantasy, and boundary-pushing creativity.
