Art Alive x Young Collectors’ Programme presents a textile upscaling workshop with artist Smriti Dixit, centered on the transformative potential of textiles. Rooted in an ethos of renewal, the workshop invites participants to engage directly with discarded and pre-used textiles, fabrics that carry traces of daily life, memory, and wear. These fabrics become the raw material and Smriti Dixit will guide participants in the art of upcycling used textiles, transforming them into pieces of art that can be used as everyday objects such as keychains, jewellery etc.
Smriti Dixit’s practice is deeply informed by the physicality of materials: she knots, binds, and layers textiles to build new structures that reflect her responses to perceived experiences. Drawing from this approach, participants will experiment with similar processes, using their hands to manipulate cloth, thread, and fiber into forms that emerge intuitively from their own stories and sensory encounters.
The workshop encourages participants to think through the materiality of textiles, how their tactility can communicate meaning. Whether its a personal memory, a cultural motif, or a statement on repair and resilience, each creation becomes an intimate reflection. Through the simple act of reworking the familiar, the workshop opens up a space to reconsider the value of everyday materials and the endless possibilities within them.
Requirements: Please bring an old/used piece of fabric/garment that you would like to upscale into a piece of art.
