Gallerie Nvya presents its exhibition Woven Narratives celebrating a true milestone: Krishen Khanna’s (b. 1925) 100th year and his eight decades of continuous artistic contribution. As the last surviving member of the iconic Progressive Artists’ Group (PAG), Khanna is a towering figure in Indian Modernism, whose work provides powerful social and historical commentary rooted in the lived Indian experience. Second exhibition in the trilogy, this exhibition focuses on his profound and iconic exploration of the ‘Bandwallahs’, a signature subject he adopted in the early 1970s. These figures are not merely street performers; they function as a powerful, living relic of the past, embodying a crucial duality that speaks to India’s complex socio-political history. They carry the disciplined legacy of colonial British military bands while simultaneously performing the popular, vibrant tunes of contemporary Indian cinema.
