Artist Ravinder Reddy is a modest recluse. He lives a solitary life in coastal Visakhapatnam in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, where he spends time working in his studio and unwinding in his magical garden. “If there is no sexuality, there is no life. Sexuality is part of our life and culture” he says, describing the very essence of his art.
Reddy is admired globally for his artistic brilliance and unique portrayal of Indian sensibilities. Modelled in clay and painted in dazzling blues, reds and golds, his sculptures of female figures are a celebration of the raw physicality of the human body. Be it a small tabletop head or a larger-than-life relief sculpture, his works are iconic in form and evoke a sense of awe in the viewer.
In this BMW Artist Film, Reddy tells us about the breakthrough moments in his studio – and why he enjoys playing with scale.
Ravinder Reddy currently lives in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, where he works as an artist and teacher. He is represented by Vadehra Art Gallery in New Delhi.
