Tanya Goel is best known for her magnificent abstract paintings inspired by the architecture of her native New Delhi. Defined by dynamic grid lines, her canvases evoke the calm, chaos and structure of India’s capital city. “When you zoom into things, the surface and textures become really obvious”, she says, expanding on the idea.
A graduate of Yale School of Art, Tanya considers colour as a subject worthy of exploration. “What interests me most about colour is that it is not a fact, it is fiction”, she tells us, sitting amidst an enormous pile of scientific apparatus you would expect to find in a laboratory. Executed with great precision, her compositions give free reign to light, movement and colour.
In this BMW Artist Film, we catch Tanya Goel creating one of her monumental wall murals.
Born in 1985, Tanya Goel currently lives and works in Gurugram, India. She is represented by Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke in Mumbai and Nature Morte in New Delhi.
