Gallery Espace presents Emerald Leaf & Golden Fibre, a solo exhibition by Sonia Mehra Chawla, with curatorial advice by Nancy Adajania. Through mixed-media paintings, photographic installations and video works, the exhibition explores the colonial histories of tea and jute in Bengal and their impact on its ecology, communities and cultural landscapes. Drawing on archival research and fieldwork across India and the UK, Chawla examines the exploitation of natural resources, the erasure of indigenous knowledge and the labour behind these industries. The exhibition also reflects on displacement, ecological change and the possibilities of building more reciprocal relationships with the natural world.
