Subcontinent presents its second exhibition, Fifty Years of Magical Thinking. Taking its name from Joan Didion’s seminal memoir, The Year of Magical Thinking, the exhibition explores a time when artists embraced impossible possibilities and fluid realities. For Didion, magical thinking was a survival mechanism amid personal upheaval. This exhibition expands on her concept, delving into the realms of creative imagination, myth-making, and resistance.
Featuring significant artworks from the 1960s to the 2000s, the exhibition showcases the most vital artistic practices of the era by artists from diverse lineages and traditions: KG Subramanyan, Bhupen Khakhar, VR Patel, Madhvi Parekh, Jodhaiya Bai Baiga, Sakti Burman, K Laxma Goud, Rekha Rodwittiya, Surendran Nair, Ratnabali Kant, and Kalu Ram Panchal.
