Pulp Society presents Grams per Square Matter (GSM) with artists from Common Ground Collective, continuing their summer tradition of showcasing a diverse array of practices on and with paper. GSM as a unit of measurement helps determine the thickness and strength of paper. In artistic practice, the interwoven fibres within papers often also carry gesture, material, feeling, and process. GSM brings together seven artists from the Common Ground Collective who engage with paper as surface, and structure. As conversations within the collective oscillate between material and matter, what has emerged is a body of work that is both experimental, and intentional. While each artist approaches this material in their own way, the exhibition is a pressing together of distinct practices co-existing in proximity while sharing a common ground for collaboration.
