AMA Artist Award

The inaugural recipient of the AMA Artist Award, Los Angeles-based artist Umar Rashid presents a solo booth at India Art Fair 2026.
For more than two decades, Rashid has built a sprawling narrative world, most notably his Frenglish Empire, that confronts the traditional custodians of history through paintings and sculptures tracing shifting political forces and diverse characters, both real and imagined. For his showcase at India Art Fair Rashid presents a variety of work including brand new paintings exploring colonial histories of India.
Launched by Angus Montgomery Arts, the AMA Artist Award is designed to give invaluable international exposure to artists working today, enabling them to expand their audiences and networks. This initiative aims to help further bridge the North American and Asia Pacific art communities by supporting artists to exhibit at India Art Fair and Tokyo Gendai, connecting them with new audiences across Asia while deepening AMA’s engagement with North America.
Selected by a distinguished curatorial committee comprising Rita Gonzalez (LACMA), Yuko Hasegawa (Curator and Art Critic, Japan), and Dr. Deepanjana Klein (Kiran Nadar Museum of Art), Umar Rashid was chosen for his cross-disciplinary practice that creates alternative historical cosmologies and narratives from the perspective of the historically silenced.
